Alison Kiilling vroeg mij deze tekening te maken voor de installatie van Killing Architects voor de 18<sup>e<\/sup> internationale architectuurtentoonstelling van La Biennale di Venezia (curator Lesley Lokko). Killing Architects combineert onderzoeksjournalistiek met architecturale en ruimtelijke analyse-instrumenten. Killing Architects gebruikte voor dit onderzoek satellietbeelden, 3D-modellering en analyse van de Chinese gevangenisbouwvoorschriften. Om deze informatie te toetsen aan journalistieke normen gebruikte Killing Architects satellietbeelden om de informatie te bevestigen en door te communiceren over de mate van zekerheid van de informatie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naar schatting zitten sinds 2016 meer dan 1 miljoen moslimminderheden gevangen in een geheim netwerk van detentiekampen en gevangenissen in Xinjiang, China. De Oeigoeren zijn de grootste getroffen groep. Volgens de Chinese regering zijn de kampen onderdeel van een onderwijsprogramma om &#8216;extremisme&#8217; te bestrijden. In de praktijk werden mensen soms jarenlang vastgehouden voor religieuze uitingen en ander gedrag dat als onwenselijk werd beschouwd, zoals bijvoorbeeld het downloaden van WhatsApp of het volgen van een studie in het buitenland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, toen dit onderzoek begon, werd gedacht dat er 1 miljoen mensen vastzaten en 1.200 kampen bestonden, terwijl er slechts enkele tientallen waren gevonden. Er was weinig bekend over het netwerk van kampen dat de Chinese regering in Xinjiang heeft gebouwd voor de massale detentie van moslims of de locaties waar de vermiste mensen waren &#8216;verdwenen. De installatie is het resultaat van een gezamenlijk onderzoek hiernaar door Alison Killing (architect), Megha Rajagopalan (journalist) en Christo Buschek (softwareontwikkelaar).
