When Surinam gained independence from holland in 1975, many people left the country. Out of Surinam’s 819,000 citizens, around 327,000 live in holland. Many settled in Southeast Amsterdam. They are Amsterdam’s biggest ethnic group, followed by Moroccans and Turks.
